victor: ok just as an aside from the conversation (and to help make this more of an "open source" website) I would like to introduce archive.org to those who dont know it. (Umm and a warning... the videos are huge so be sure you have a fast connection.) - feel free to post other "open source" sites and I will add them to the sidebar.
Comments:
hey i thought id join in on this thing with a sort of comment here: i have some other neat links to websites glorifying the open source ideology embodied in this groupblog:

creativecommons.org :: used often with works of lit, film, music, art, etc. that are published to sites like archive.org, it has a bunch of open source, ‘copyleft’ licenses for anyone to use for free with their work, allowing anyone to use, share, modify, sell, whatever they want to with the work as long as the original author receives credit and any derivative works are published under the same license.

freeculture.org :: blog postings, news, articles, and lovely free culture manifestos:
”The mission of the Free Culture movement is to build a bottom-up, participatory structure to society and culture, rather than a top-down, closed, proprietary structure.
“We believe that culture is a two-way affair, about participation, not merely consumption. We will not sit at the end of a one-way media tube and buy things until we look like the people on Friends. With the Internet and other advances, the technology exists for a new paradigm of creation, one where anyone can be an artist, and anyone can succeed, based not on their industry connections, but on their merit.
“We refuse to accept a future of digital feudalism where we do not actually own the products we buy, but we are merely granted limited uses of them as long as we pay the rent. We must halt and reverse the recent radical expansion of "intellectual property rights," which threaten to reach the point where they trump any and all other rights of the individual and society.“

wikipedia.org :: “a web-based, free content encyclopedia designed to be read and edited by anyone…16,000 registered users collaboratively edit and maintain the English edition Wikipedia, which has allowed it in less than four years of operation to become the world's largest encyclopedia” every subject, past and esp. present, its amazing
